Research Methodology in Linguistics Week 2

Here we are! Welcome to week2.

Today is an exciting day for me and my friends. We are divided into 2 groups. We do role plays and choose who will be A, B, and C. Next the lecturer tells the rule for only A from both group then B and C. Next the role plays begin! I am C at the first round so my job is to observe the communication between A and B. It is interesting to keeping looking and listening to them. I write down everything I observe. When time is up, I take A role, I become a interviewer asking C in the same question "What do you like?"

"This question is too broad, how do we know what exactly do we like  because we have a lot! but let keep doing my job. The interview is continuing until the bell ring. After the activity, the lecturer asks us to give feedback then we discuss what do we learn form this activity. All we learn can be concluded as following:

First, we must shape the research question. Make it clear. Is it too wide or narrow? How to design your research question?

Second, the psychology of communication. For example, how to sit, how to react to interviewee, gesture and verbal.

Third, interviewer.  You must be the good listener. You may have a chance to interview your interviewee. And did anyone use to do research with the group of your population. Go and ask them. You will get the good suggestion. Who you should go and ask for help in fieldwork? It may be the leader of their community or someone.  Moreover, you also should study the background of your interviewee.

For research in Linguistics, it normally subjective. It depends on your subject. So your mission is how to prove your work as a objective. You may be asked if the interviewer is not you, will the answer or data can be changed. Therefore, you methodology is very important! Another issue we should concern is "Observer's paradox". If a interviewee knows he is observed, will he tell you a truth. So how to make you work be objective.

The used instruments in this activity are 'structured and semi-structured. Structured interview, you can skip and repeat the questions but semi-structured interview, you can switch the questions.

There are 4 types of research , Fieldwork, Desk research, Qualitative and Quantitative (qi square and anova is useful for quantitative).

In the past, we use coding analysis by coloring but now program is useful for analyzing conversation and discourse.

Time flies. three hours is gone. I need a battery!
